We spend our entire lives pretending that death will never come to us. We bury friends and loved ones. We stand at their graves and cry. But in our hearts, we don’t believe that our loved ones will ever do the same thing beside our graves.

We can’t imagine a world without us. What will it be like when our families come back to the house and we aren’t there? What will the world be when we are gone from it?

More to the point, where will we be?

A lot of people believe that when we die we go back to non-existence, that our fate is annihilation.

I not only do not believe this, I’ve had enough experiences in my life, things that I won’t talk about here, to assure you that no, we are not destined for annihilation. We go on.

I don’t pretend to understand what that means. I only know that it is true. We go on.

Some people die without any preparation. They are standing in a building before the bomb goes off, driving in their car before the wreck, sleeping in their beds before their heart stops. They are unaware and when they find themselves dead, they are confused and shocked. Other people have a long time to get ready.

Either they age out and die slowly, by years of gradual falling apart, or they have a disease that gives them a sell-by date that can’t be ignored.

It’s hard when young people die; hard for them, and for the ones they leave behind.

The song in this video was written and performed by a young man who knew, as he says, that “it won’t be long now.” The gift of knowing. God gives it to some of us. I think sometimes He does that for the person who is dying. Other times, he does it for the rest of us.

However you face your death, I hope that you will use your life to do good and bring love. That’s the only legacy that matters when we leave.
