Pope Francis called Cardinal Timothy Dolan, the Archbishop of New York Tuesday to express his concern and love for the people of New York during this pandemic.

The Holy Father specifically asked Cardinal Dolan to express his “concern and closeness” to New Yorkers, especially those who are sick.

“He asked me to relay his prayerful best wishes to the sick, the doctors, the nurses, EMTs, medical professionals and caregivers who are tending to them, our civic leaders, as well as our priests, religious and lay people.”

The United States has the highest number of cases of COVID-19 in the world. More than 26,000 Americans have died in the space of a few weeks. New York has been especially hard hit, with over 203,000 cases of infection and 11,000 deaths. New York City alone has had 7,905 deaths in less than a month due to the virus.

The International Monetary Fund has forecast that the worldwide economy will contract by 3% this year, something that has not happened since the Great Depression.
