Christians today appear to have stopped believing that the 10 Commandments and the Gospels are actually binding on us. We especially have lost all concept of the simple fact that lying is still a sin, and it doesn’t matter who tells the lie. Breaking a solemn oath is also a sin. When you lay your hand on the Bible and take an oath, you are making a solemn promise and you are calling on the Lord God Almighty to be your witness to that oath.
Breaking an oath is a form of perjury before God and it is a grave sin. The word of a Christian, at any time, even without taking a solemn oath, should be trustworthy. The fact that is no longer is reflects how gravely we are traveled away from the Way that leads to eternal life.
