Friday: Christian Persecution Pope Leo called the bombing of Mar Elias Church in Damascus Syria on June 22 a “vile terrorist attack.” Attacks on Christians in Syria have increased markedly since the change of government. Syrian Christians have experienced the worst violence in years. Christians, who were 10% of the population, have now dropped to less than 2%. There could be as few as 300,000 Christians left in the country. The suicide bombing on Mar Elias Church killed 25 Christian... Read more

Then Jesus came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. As was His custom, He entered the synagogue on the Sabbath. And when He stood up to read, the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to Him. Unrolling it, He found the place and read.   “The Spirit of the Lord is on Me, because He has anointed Me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent Me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery... Read more

This is the kind of story that would make the baby Jesus weep while satan did a victory dance. The Catholic Archbishop of Toulouse, France just appointed a priest who was convicted and served time in prison for raping a 16-year-old boy to the position of chancellor and episcopal delegate for marriages. The bishop claimed, as these guys always do, that he had “taken the side of mercy.” That, in my experience, is what  they always say. I personally know... Read more

The IRS issued a big change in their enforcement of the law. They now say that churches can now endorse Republicans … errrrr “candidates” … from the pulpit. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops immediately issued a straight forward statement saying, essentially, “Not us. We won’t do that.” In an overturn of 60 years of law, the IRS has ruled that clergy can — with no fear of losing their tax-free legal status — stand up in church and... Read more

The bishop of San Bernardino has formally suspended the Sunday mass obligation throughout his diocese due to ICE attempts to arrest worshippers. The Diocese of Nashville issued a statement in response to ICE raids reminding the faithful that they are not obligated to attend Sunday mass if they are fearful for their well-being. ICE has arrested worshippers who were attending services in a number of denominations. I wrote about ICE arrests of Iranian Christians who were seeking asylum in this... Read more

America’s Catholic bishops condemned the passage of Trump’s “big beautiful bill” last week and said that the Church will work to pass more humane legislation. The USCCB issued a letter citing the fact that the bill would: Greatly increase the national debt.  Contains massive cuts to Medicaid and Snap.  Would take away the medical insurance of 34 million Americans.  Would take away government support for Americans who are afflicted by extreme weather.  At the same time, the things in the... Read more

Pope Leo called for an end to “the global scandal of hunger.” He went on to denounce the use of starvation as a weapon of war. He called starving people to death a “cheap way to wage war.”  That should be an obvious truth to any decent person. If Jesus Christ is your Lord, it should be a call to do whatever you can to stop the malicious starvation of millions of people that is taking place in our world.... Read more

How many people do you have to kill before you’re not pro life anymore? Trump and his puppet Republicans in Congress were well warned that his cuts to the National Weather Service would result in tragedy.  Prominent meteorologists and news outlets spoke out against Trump’s cuts to the National Weather Service and NOAA while the cuts were happening four months ago. They warned him in a very public way that people would die because of what he was doing. Now... Read more

Repeat a lie often enough, and it becomes the truth. Joseph Goebbels. I got mine. Did you get yours? I’m talking about the lying “official” email from Social Security that evidently went out to millions of people yesterday.  This email was rolled out like something that was put in the pipe days in advance. It also correlates with the lies I’m seeing on right wing cable news. It has all the earmarks of a prepared media campaign of lies that was... Read more
