This is from four years ago. The Holy Father visited what here in America we call a nursing home. He is giving an example for all bishops, as well as you and meet. When was the last time your bishop did something like this? When was the last time you did it? Caring for the sick is one of the things that Jesus specifically said we would be judged for when we die. In fact, He said — and He... Read more

Certain countries are outliers in the current pandemic. They are doing just fine while the United States of America flounders in the incompetence of our dishonest and crazy (anybody can see it) president and the outrageous misbehavior of his followers.  What is the one thing that these countries have in common? What do their leaders have that ours clearly does not? It turns out that what their leaders have is two X chromosomes. Women heads of state around the world... Read more

A new French study indicates that Hydroxychloroquine, the drug that President Trump has been pushing as a cure for COVID-19, is ineffective in treating patients with virus-caused pneumonia and requiring oxygen. The study, involved collected data from 4 French hospitals. It included 181 patients with COVID-19 pneumonia. Eighty-four patients received Hydroxychloroquine within 48 hours of admission and 97 patients did not. There was no difference in whether or not the patients who received the drug ended up in ICU or... Read more

I got up this morning to another story about a showboat preacher and his ignorant followers holding a church service during this pandemic.  This time, the preacher directed members of his flock to hug one another, give each other fist bumps and otherwise do all they could to spread COVID-19 among themselves.  According to the news story, the preacher’s sermon was — predictably — short of actual Scripture and long on made-up miracle stories and talk about the devil. The... Read more

Pope Francis called Cardinal Timothy Dolan, the Archbishop of New York Tuesday to express his concern and love for the people of New York during this pandemic. The Holy Father specifically asked Cardinal Dolan to express his “concern and closeness” to New Yorkers, especially those who are sick. “He asked me to relay his prayerful best wishes to the sick, the doctors, the nurses, EMTs, medical professionals and caregivers who are tending to them, our civic leaders, as well as... Read more

The malaria pill that has caused so much debate does not appear to be living up to claims concerning its COVID-19 killing abilities.  That is not the final word on the drug. It is the result of a small study that has not yet been peer reviewed. That said, preliminary results from a Chinese study, which was a randomized, double-blind study, do not show that Hydroxychloroquine helped infected patients get rid of the virus.  Further studies on the drug continue.... Read more

As for me and my house, we will serve you Lord. We will not bow down to the gods of this world. In this time in history, those lines are especially pertinent. A lot of American Christians can not say them honestly.   Read more

I’ve called it “chemosobby,” and “mastectosobby.”   Heart attacks have their own version of it, as do strokes, massive injuries, and just about any other major physical trauma. “It” is the experience of a sudden emotional downdraft that sucks you and all your thinking into the pit of something that’s closer to despair than depression. It’s the temporary blackness of reaching your personal bottom while still caught in the trap of whatever has you.  I call it “the sobbies.”  If... Read more

Pope Francis’ homily at mass today is well worth a listen for all of us, especially considering how divided and angry we have become. Read more

I t appears that COVID is worse in regions of Africa with the most intense persecution of Christians. My guess is that one reason why is that religious persecution usually walks in lockstep with ignorance, corruption and poor governance. Whatever the reasons, the virus seems to be making an already tragic situation every more tragic. From Global Christian Relief: According to research, data indicates a direct correlation between the countries in sub-Saharan Africa that are most vulnerable to the virus... Read more
