Things Don’t Always Work

Things Don’t Always Work November 20, 2012

It seems that every day something else isn’t working: the electricity goes out about once a day, and there have been some water ‘issues,’ too. And now the Internet is acting up. And then the bathroom sink fell off the wall. And so on.

I don’t enjoy any of that. I’m an impatient person and I like things to work WELL and ALWAYS.

But this is a good lesson: not just to be grateful for the USA where things always (usually) work (if you have the money to make sure they work) but to realize that life can go on and I can be okay even when things are not exactly to my liking.

I’m not exactly going all Corrie Ten Boom/Ann Voskamp and giving thanks for darkness, the occasional lack of water, and (horrors!) slow internet connections, but I am realizing that if I hang my happiness on these things, I’ll end up disappointed more often than not. And I’d rather not have my happiness depend on the undependable.

(Even though a lot of times, it still does, alas.)
