2.) …But the Issues We Care Most About Are Undervalued
There is 1.2 trillion dollars in student loan debt in America. That’s a lot.
What do the two people who might be the next president plan to do about this?
Fuck and all, apparently. Clinton had to be dragged kicking and screaming to supporting tuition-free college for families making under $125,000 a year, and that’s after several disgusting and insulting missteps along the way. Even so, this does nothing about all the current debt, which, let me remind you, is over a trillion dollars.
Trump, to his credit (I can’t believe I just wrote that), has spoken out against the government profiting off of student loans. Great, but he’s totally cool with private companies exploiting vulnerable students who’re just trying to better themselves!
On the environment, which is one of the greatest issues of our time and the one that millennials will truly suffer the long-term consequences of, both candidates are uninspiring. Trump thinks anthropogenic climate change is all a hoax, of course, and Clinton has taken millions from fossil fuel lobbyists, and refuses to support a ban on fracking. She might be marginally better than Trump, but if the best we can say about someone is that they’re “marginally better than Donald Trump,” they might not be the best progressive candidate.
So when we see someone like Dr. Jill Stein, who promises to wipe away student debt (sounds a lot like Jubilee to me) and is literally the head of the Green Party, it’s natural that a lot of us would be inspired.
There’s nothing stopping Hillary Clinton from adopting more progressive positions on these issues to sway millennial voters…except maybe all those millions of dollars.
At the end of the day, though, what it all comes down to is…
