An Open Letter to My Son

An Open Letter to My Son 2014-08-22T16:03:33-05:00

My dear sweet, too cute for words, #6,
Sweet boy, I love you, and I know that you are moderately fond of me as well.  In the time that you have known me, which really is the whole of your life, have you ever known me to not need sleep?  I ask this because you seem to have decided to give sleep up for Lent.  While I applaud your willingness to sacrifice during this penitential season, perhaps giving up sleep may not be your most prudent option.

My beloved one, I tried to discuss this with you at midnight when you decided a snack might be a good idea.  I brought it up again at 1:30 when the sight of my sleeping face brought you to squeals of laughter.  I love you, too.  I’m tired.  I tried to reason this out with you at 2:45 and 3:30, and thought I might have gotten through, but your joy at 4:45 is close to inhuman.

I bring this to your attention because, as you may recall, I got sick this weekend.  Dr Google says extreme tiredness is a major contributing factor.  You food supply is in jeopardy here, Bubba.  It would be in your own best interest if I were well rested.  If you only decide to sleep for selfish reasons, that’s okay with me.  Really.

How about you try this for tonight…we’ll both sleep, the whole night through, and in the morning we’ll both sing that silly song you like and dance around my bedroom with the hoppy little dance that makes us both laugh.  We’ll find something else for you to give up for Lent.

Love always and forever,
your Mom

P.S.  You grandma says we should move your crib downstairs where I can’t hear you.  At first, I thought she was a loony, but as the days go on she’s beginning to look like the wisest woman who ever lived.  Trust me, neither of us want it to get to that point, we can’t let Grandma be right.  Just once I’d like to be smarter.  You can help.  Thank you.  xxoo, Me
