LOST Rewatch: Hearts and Minds

LOST Rewatch: Hearts and Minds October 25, 2014

This episode starts with a close-up of an eye – this time Boone’s. Boone is unhappy with the relationship that is developing between Sayid and Shannon.

This episode focuses on the hatch – which seems impossible to open. Locke says that Michelangelo’s father had failed to recognize the divinity in his son. Michelangelo stared at a block of marble for months, “working.”

When Boone insists that he wants to tell Shannon about the hatch, Locke hits him on the head and ties him up. He then leaves him with a knife, and tells him that he will be able to cut himself free when he has the proper motivation.

In his flashback, when Boone goes to the police to report that Shannon has been abused by a boyfriend, we not only learn that they are stepsiblings, but also see Sawyer breing brought into the policestation. We later learn that Shannon faked it to get money from Boone and his mother. And we learn that they became lovers.

Sun has planted a garden. Kate learns Sun’s secret, that she speaks English.

In what we later learn was a hallucination caused by something Locke put on his head, Boone hears Shannon calling for help. Locke, we initially believe, tied up Shannon to motivate Boone to escape. They shelter from the monster in a circle of trees.

Locke gives Sayid a compass. It doesn’t point where north should be.

Charlie says to Jack that John Locke is the one person on the island that he would have absolute faith in to save them all. Still hallucinating, Boone tells Shannon that Locke is the only one who has a clue to what is going on. Then they flee from the monster again, and Shannon is taken. He finds her dead, and confronts Locke, and learns that he was acting under the influence of a hallucinogen, and admits that Shannon’s death made him feel relieved.

We thus have the first hint that Locke is not merely a person with religious views of the sort that can speak of an artistic genius’ divinity, but who is open to the use of drugs to bring about altered states of consciousness.
