LOST Rewatch: Greatest Hits

LOST Rewatch: Greatest Hits February 10, 2015

Jack tells the survivors that Juliette told him about the plan of the Others to take the pregnant women. Jack got Danielle to bring dynamite from the Black Rock. Instead of hiding again, they are going to mark the tents as Juliette was supposed to, and when the Others show up, Jack says, we’re going to “blow ’em all to hell.” Karl shows up in the outrigger and warns them that the Others are coming today, not tomorrow, Alex having gotten Karl to send word.

Danielle’s distress signal is interfering with the satellite phone. But Ben is also using the Looking Glass station to jam signals off the island. Sayid has a diagram of the station from among the documents they found.

LOST Greatest HitsDesmond says that he saw a flash of Claire and Aaron getting on a rescue helicopter. He says that if Charlie doesn’t die this time, the rescue won’t happen. Desmond tells him that there is a blinking yellow light in a hatch, and they turn it off, then Charlie drowns. Charlie volunteers to swim to the Looking Glass station, but it seems it will be a suicide mission and so Jack doesn’t want him to go. But when they learn that the others are coming sooner, the plan becomes necessary. Charlie has a chance to say his goodbyes, although the other people do not know he will die. They do not have enough wire yet, and so they will set off the dynamite using guns, and will send everyone else to the radio tower. Jack will lead them.

In flashbacks, we see Charlie and Liam arguing about the band when stuck in the rain, when they hear themselves on the radio for the first time. We see him jumping in a pool to learn to swim with his dad. His brother giving him a ring that is a family heirloom. Charlie, on the day which Desmond saw when Charlie played the guitar and it started raining, rescued Nadia from a mugger, and she told him he is a hero, that five other people walked past the alley and didn’t intervene.

On the island, Naomi says that they released a greatest hits album after the news broke that Charlie from Driveshaft had died in a plane crash. And Charlie makes a list of his greatest moments, which are the features of the flashbacks. Meeting Claire is the top of his list. He leaves his heirloom ring behind for Claire and Aaron in the crib, and when they are above the Looking Glass station, he gives the list to Desmond to give to Claire. Desmond suggests that perhaps he keeos seeing Charlie die because he’s supposed to take his place. But Charlie knocks him out and dives into the water wearing the weight belt, leaving Desmond unconscious on the outrigger. He makes it to the underwater station.

This episode was more interesting on the rewatch, as we see Ben losing control of the situation and of the Others, and also knowing that Charlie really was going to die. The image of “greatest hits” encapsulating the best moments in one’s life was a poignant double entendre with the Driveshaft album.
