Via Stuff Fundies Like. Baptists get picked on a lot in this regard, and not entirely undeservedly. Yet there is a sense in which all of religious history, and all of human history, is similar – people trying to improve on what came before, and sometimes succeeding, but more often than not, producing something just as bad if not worse.

Growing up I thought it was odd that only a small group of U.S. Christians got it right. But on the other hand, how historical and diverse is progressive Christianity?

Read for comprehension: (quote) Yet there is a sense in which all of religious history, and all of human
history, is similar – people trying to improve on what came before, and
sometimes succeeding, but more often than not, producing something just
      as bad if not worse.

I wouldn’t say all of religious history; some groups seem better able to recognize divergent, equally valid groups where their own church doesn’t stand in direct succession to Christ and the Apostles. Similarly for history generally. But this certainly is a problem for more than just Baptists and Christian evangelicals/fundamentalists.
