The New York Times recently featured an article about the resurgence of liberal religion in the realm of politics. It included the quote that I have turned into a meme above. “How do you take two or three Scriptures and make a theology out of it, and claim it is the moral perspective, and leave 2,000 on the table?” he said. “That is a form of theological malpractice.” – Rev. William J. Barber II I disagree that the religious left... Read more

Steve Wiggins shared the above meme featuring a quote from the Bible, an image, and the addition of “Just Sayin’.” What other verses from the Bible deserve similar treatment? Please share the ideas in comments, with or without the images that you created to turn your ideas into memes. If you come up with good ones, I might create them and share them (or share the ones you create). Steve’s post is worth reading, not just for the picture. Here’s... Read more

A couple of days ago I received my copy of the proceedings of the York Christian Apocrypha Symposium that I presented at on the subject of the Gospel of Jesus’ Wife. The volume is published by Cascade (an imprint of Wipf and Stock) and available through Amazon as well as the publisher’s website. Readers may recall me liveblogging the conference as it was happening. The volume includes the keynote address by Bart Ehrman which inspired me to write the parody... Read more

One of my favorite sessions at CanvasCon was about video games and learning. Many of the points made are ones that I also make regularly when I explain my passion for gamification. The talk was by Matt Brenner, whose Twitter handle @levelupteacher is just perfect. The talk began by asking those in the audience to define the characteristics of ideal students. Brenner then described the ideal gamer, highlighting that the attributes and skills are essentially the same. The work of... Read more

On Sunday, my congregation, Crooked Creek Baptist Church, celebrated its 180th anniversary. It is the third oldest church in Indianapolis, and older than Butler University (among other things, including a significant number of countries). The following day I attended CanvasCon, a day-long event about a Learning Management System called Canvas. Butler University currently uses Moodle, and in the past has used Blackboard. We aren’t necessarily looking to replace ours, but it is good to reevaluate them regularly. Thinking about the juxtaposition... Read more

A lecture by Joel Baden, drawn to my attention by Biblical Studies Online. In an article on the same subject, he shared this cartoon:   Read more

When I mentioned in my course on the Bible and music that one of my favorite composers is Erich Wolfgang Korngold, this led a student to express interest in doing research related to his music. My initial reaction was to find myself unable to find much in the way of direct connection to the Bible. But then I was reminded that Korngold provided some music for the movie The Green Pastures, based on the dramatization by the same name of the book  Ol’... Read more

The episode begins with a countdown at NASA, at which the Doctor shows up. The Valkyrie probe is just sending back images from underneath the Martian polar ice cap – and they see the words “God Save the Queen.” So the Doctor, Bill, and Nardole take the TARDIS back to Mars in the year 1881. Nardole gets separated from them in the TARDIS and asks Missy for help to get back to Mars. The Doctor and Bill find Victorian era... Read more

When I saw this individual in what looked like the lotus position at a bus stop, I had to snap a photo. When I looked more closely as I prepared to blog about it, I realized that the man was not meditating, but looking at his phone. But it seems to me that there is still something ‘Zen’ (in the loose sense in which we use that term today) about what we are seeing in the photo. Things that used... Read more

A friend shared the above quote on Facebook, which seems to have circulated anonymously for some time. And so I thought it deserved to be turned into a meme. Read more
