The quote comes from a recent post of mine, and when a commenter said they wanted to share it, I thought it might make sense to make a meme image for that purpose. Read more

In a recent post about why Evangelical Christianity doesn’t make you a better person, Neil Carter wrote the following: Evangelical Christianity Has Messed Up Priorities The evangelical Christian vision of heaven is based on right belief, not on right behavior.  For evangelicals, it’s not the loving, caring, hard-working people of the world who get into heaven.  I mean, sure, the people who get there may or may not possess those qualities, but good character isn’t what gets you in.  You... Read more

I think this political cartoon makes an excellent point. Various things may or may not be legal, but if one is a follower of Jesus, it can be argued that his teachings burden our religious freedom. To quote Paul, “All things are lawful – but not all things are beneficial.” Christians may have the right to refuse service based on the dictates of our conscience. That doesn’t necessarily mean that we should, or that Jesus would want us to. Let me also share... Read more

The Metacriticism of Biblical Scholarship section will have a session in November focused on comparing the canons of science fiction with Biblical canons, and the ways that fans/adherents of each navigate them. I’ve had a proposal accepted for the session, and here is the abstract: “Nerd Fundamentalism: What Do Space Can(n)ons Have To Do With Biblical Canons?” The observation has more often been made in jest than in a serious manner, that both religions and science fiction franchises have canons,... Read more

For those who may have missed it, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence just asked for legislation to be created and to reach his desk by the end of the week “clarifying” that the Religious Freedom Restoration Act does not allow businesses to refuse services to anyone. He answered a question afterwards, saying that the law does not give anyone a license to discriminate against gay and lesbian couples, although he also said that he has never supported making gays and lesbians a protected... Read more

This cartoon from XKCD requires some knowledge of the philosophy of religion. The ontological argument for God’s existence is an attempt to argue for the existence of God a priori, by beginning with the idea that it is possible to imagine a being greater than which cannot be conceived. It is then pointed out that existing is greater than not existing. Therefore, it is impossible to imagine such a being, and to imagine that being not existing. What do you think?... Read more
