Given that a blogger was actually fired from his job for writing about homophones, it seemed appropriate not only to blog about it but also to share the above cartoon. It predates the incident, and yet seems perfectly designed to poke fun at the ridiculousness and sad irony of someone being fired because of a homophone combined with their employers’ lack of understanding of what homophones are. Read more

The above quote comes from a post by Jim Kidder in a series that is in turn inspired by a series by David Macmillan about being a former young-earth creationist. See too Dan Arel documenting an example of Ken Ham’s dishonesty regarding the Ark Encounter project.   Read more

I decided that it was worth getting an Office 365 subscription in order to be able to work with Microsoft Word and other Office documents on my iPad, including all the relevant features, such as footnotes and review comments. A big frustration that many users have voiced is that there is no built-in integration of Dropbox. But I have discovered that there is an inelegant but effective workaround for those of us who don’t want to give up Dropbox, but... Read more

The second part of the title of this post comes from an article about the tendency of students to try to hide their plagiarism by using a thesaurus, with frequently hilarious as well as unintelligible results. Both of these points are... Read more

I recently had the privilege to be an invited panelist at a PALNI (Private Academic Library Network of Indiana) strategic planning meeting. For post-dinner entertainment, they had a video contest, with the various libraries in the network entering submissions. The dean of the Butler University libraries, Julie Miller, submitted my “Viva La Library” video as our entry, and it got the most votes. And so it will be featured on the PALNI website in the near future. Here’s a photo of... Read more
