Growing up in the United States as a child of the early sixties, Walt Disney and his cast of animated characters served as deep influence throughout many young children’s lives, bringing a rich element of magic, joy and hope to our world.
Remember Disney’s animated version of the mythic tale, Pinocchio? We met Geppetto, a kind-hearted woodcarver who has always yearned for a son. He creates Pinocchio, this wooden marionette, and through the unforeseen power of love and deep desire, Pinocchio transforms into a life-like, walking and talking wooden figure. It’s not long before Pinocchio’s plight leads him out into the world to learn a sense of values, separating right from wrong, symbolized by his nose tremendously growing when he tells a lie. Near the end of the story, he develops a sense of conscience when choosing to save his father, Geppetto, who has been swallowed into the belly of a whale. This act of bravery and selflessness serves as a symbol for Pinocchio deserving to be a real boy, and he is turned into flesh and blood at the end of the movie.
As a child watching this movie, I walked away with a richer sense of values for living an honest life, but the most memorable character that Disney added to their version of this classic tale was a green insect dressed to the nines in top hat and tails, named Jiminy Cricket. Jiminy served as both the narrator and conscience for Pinocchio and his classic song, When You Wish Upon A Star to spread its message of hope and magic throughout the world. As we listen to these lyrics, we’re reminded of a pure sense of goodness and limitless possibilities that lie before us.
When you wish upon a star
Makes no difference who you are
Anything your heart desires
Will come to you
If your heart is in your dream
No request is too extreme
When you wish upon a star
As dreamers do
Fate is kind
She brings to those who love
The sweet fulfillment of
Their secret longing
Like a bolt out of the blue
Fate steps in and sees you through
When you wish upon a star
Your dreams come true
– Harline & Washington
