Don’t Follow Rules, Follow a Person by Robert Ricciardelli

So many people find themselves struggling to live up to what they know to be God’s standard. For them the spiritual life is composed of various rules and regulations. They have an idea of what they should be and what they should not be. They consistently struggle to live in these ideals. Their consciences play a large part in this constant effort, they live in fear and they rarely experience the joy they had been promised. They may find success from time to time but real peace, joy and authentic success seem to never arrive. The reason they will never find it is because God does not call us to a standard to be lived up to, but a Person to be lived with. There is a vast and immeasurable difference in these two ways to live. Living to obey the rules sets up a life of self only effort and defeat, while the empowered life, the only way to live, consists in enjoying the reality of Christ, the power of God to be and to do.
