Everyone knows that Fascism begins with certain clear markers. One of the main ones is harassment of critics of the leaders. Well before Mussolini became El Duce (leader) of Italy, his “Black Shirts” followers were harassing and even violently attacking critics of his movement. The same happened in Germany and Spain and other countries were Fascism was taking hold.
Recently (August 22, 2025), the American FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation) raided the Washington, D.C. home of former US security advisor John Bolton who served Donald Trump during his first term in office. Lately, however, he has been a harsh critic of Trump and his administration.
The FBI had a judicial warrant as they entered Bolton’s home, while he was away, and searched for some potentially incriminating evidence. Up until then, there was no evidence or claim that Bolton was guilty of anything except being a Trump critic.
What’s next for Bolton? Well, at the very least, months if not years of waiting and worrying. If I were him, I would seek political asylum in Canada.
At worst, he will be indicted for having in his possession (home and/or office) classified documents, something that has been claimed about Trump himself!
This move against Bolton is almost certainly at Trump’s behest even though he denies it. If he is telling the truth, it is likely that the director of the FBI, a Trump appointee, did it to impress his boss.
Fascism experts who are watching Trump closely are already saying that a line has here been crossed into Fascist territory. When it is seen in light of other things Trump has done recently, such as sending National Guard troops into the streets of Washington, D.C., the case becomes more certain. Add to those the creation of a concentration camp in Florida to “house” illegal immigrants. Add to those Trump’s rhetoric against his enemies and critics, including former presidents. He has labeled Barak Obama a traitor. On and on and on one could go in listing the evidences of incipient Fascism in America under Donald Trump.
