CNN just ran a rather unqualified story on the residences of Catholic Archbishops in the US. Joanne McPortland, Deacon Greg, and Jennifer Fitz cover it in rich and fair detail. The story affected me in a personal way. It pricked something in me that may serve to explain some my more deeply felt political intuitions. * I wish we would share how our lived experiences shape and form our politics. Behind every bumper sticker is a story. At least there should be. Being thoughtful and reflective about our ideological tastes... Read more

The July Experiment went well, despite the fact that I didn’t always obey my own rules and posted about half as much as I intended. I think the idea of making each month have an experimental focus is a good thing for me, so I’ll carry it over into August. This month, excepting interviews (Leah Libresco is on deck!), I will limit myself to 250 words, with one or two exceptions. Since Late to Love, my Augustinian soul album, will be... Read more

(As with anything that is mostly true, committing it to language will require overstatements and provisos will be omitted for the sake of the whole. Most of all, it will require patience and the assurance I am aware of the glaring irony and even hypocrisy of the points I will try to make.) * There are two categories of blogging and social media sharing. There are the wounded and broken notes, that share (and often overshare) about death and financial ruin, sentimental memes... Read more

Wiseblood Records, my small but mighty music label, sent out the following memo a few days ago: On August 28, 2014, Wiseblood Records will release our inaugural collection of music, Late to Love, by Sam Rocha. Late to Love is musically inspired by the genealogy of soul music that scans the genres of spirituals, folk, gospel, country, R&B, blues, funk, jazz, hip-hop, neo-soul and nu-jazz. T-Bone Walker, Ray Charles, Gil Scott Heron, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Bill Withers, and Curtis Mayfield—with dashes of... Read more

Pope Francis has obviously turned up the volume on a number of issues, and this has generated criticism from those who identity themselves as American conservatives. There are religious voices that rival and complicate the voice of First Things in prominence, at places like Ethika Politika and The American Conservative and elsewhere (including here at Patheos). The more traditional alternatives like Commonweal and America seem to be on the ascendancy. It has become somewhat fashionable to give Francis all the credit for this. But that’s not the... Read more

There was a time, not too long ago, when adults heckled children — protesting the school integration movement. Sometimes these protests became physically violent. But there can be violence in a look. There can be violence in a word.  The time of adult violence against children is not over. There was a time, long ago, when — as Billy Kangas reminds us — a child named Jesus was an undocumented refugee, too. Read more

Your punctually tardy weekly apocalypse in eight points: 1. Pope Francis has decided to stop giving interviews and instead plans begin to taking them. Whoopi Goldberg, from The View, is reportedly atop his short list. 2. Arizona Republican congressional candidate, Adam Kwasman, mistook a bus of YMCA campers for immigrant children and Tweeted his displeasure to the relief of late night comedy writers everywhere. 3. President Obama, who holds the all-time record for immigrant deportations with nearly two-million and counting, is... Read more

Calah Alexander was born and raised in Bedford, TX; she blogs at Barefoot and Pregnant. Her style of blogging is subtle: At first glance, she appears to be a mommy blogger, and would be the first to agree with this classification. But in her posts, and this interview process, she reveals a confessional motivation that is driven by a sharp, critical, and searching mind accompanied by a full and generous heart. Her story of life and faith are tightly woven... Read more

I had never visited Pewsitter* before, and had only heard of it, in online passing, until about ten minutes ago. I don’t know about their history or mission of anyone (that I know of) who writes or works there. My sense, prima facie, is that much like The Vortex is made in the image of the O’Reilly Factor, Pewsitter is an imagus Drudge. So be it. My comparison here is simply that: a one to one comparison. * Recently Simcha Fisher... Read more

Yesterday, Timothy Cardinal Dolan posted a brief note at his site where he unambiguously reprimands those treating immigrants with hostility and scorn. A week or so ago, I watched with shame as an angry mob in southern California surrounded buses filled with frightened, hungry, homeless immigrants, shaking fists, and shouting for them to “get out!” It was un-American; it was un-biblical; it was inhumane.  It worked, as the scared drivers turned the buses around and sought sanctuary elsewhere. The incendiary... Read more
