I cheerfully admit to some delighted confusion in Crossway’s release of the works of John Owen. Having released seven other volumes, new out is Volume 9 The Gospel. This is of course deeply confusing. More confusing is that the others in the series include volumes 8, 18, and 28. (At least one of which I’ve reviewed here.) I assume they’re using the order of the older Banner of Truth series–though that one only went up to 16 (not counting Owen’s Hebrews commentaries).

Well, whatever they’re doing I like it. We need more John Owen in the world, and this book is a great example of why. Volume 9 of Crossway’s series includes the OG itself, The Death of Death in the Death of Christ. It also contains On the Death of Christ, which I have not read but which I am very much looking forward to.
That said, this volume would be worth the cost alone even if all it had were The Death of Death in the Death of Christ. This is Owen’s masterpiece, and the definitive statement on limited atonement. Or, as I think we’re supposed to call it now, “definite atonement.” Biblical, robust, rich, and a blessing to all who read it, this book should be on every pastor’s shelf and in every church library. And Crossway’s new edition is an attractive addition to any such shelf…
