4. The last 9/11 search & rescue dog
Bretagne (pronounced “Brittany”) was believed to be the last ground zero search and rescue dog. This year at age 16, she was euthanized and given a hero’s funeral. But back in 2001, this golden retriever was digging through the rubble of the Twin Towers searching for survivors. She found none. But she proved her worth becoming a therapy dog for so many who needed comfort.
Bretagne’s bravery continued after 9/11 through other national disasters, like hurricanes Katrina and Rita. She also visited elementary schools and helped kids overcome their fear of reading in front of the class by letting them read to her.
