Spiritual Maturity at Work

Spiritual Maturity at Work

I must be growing more spiritually mature.

I say this because of the surprising response I’ve had recently to receiving two incidents of bad news at work. Bad news, as in a call that says, “Hi Brad. There’s been a complication. The deal is off.”

You know how it is. You spend weeks and months working hard to bring an important project to the finish line so that everyone can cheer you on as you bring it home. “Here’s one for the team!” you’ll shout out to the supportive crowds lining your office hallways. The effort pays off. You’re bringing in the results that everyone expects of you. You hit your targets.

Well, usually I would freak out over a phone call like that. But this time, I just said, “Yeah, okay. It will work out.” and then just went on about my business.

Like, I didn’t worry about it.

What’s up with that? A strange sense of calm was already in me, up to bat, ready to take the news with a level head and quiet confidence regarding the outcome.  It’s going to be okay. God is with me. God cares about this project.

Two weeks later, both problems have been resolved.  And I didn’t really even have to intervene much. Things just seemed to work themselves out.

Either this is a sign of my budding spiritual growth – or else I’m just getting too old to care any more.
