• When something someone writes or says frightens the white evangelical tribe, it’s first defense is to try to delegitimize the writer/speaker, thereby redefining them as an outsider who can safely be ignored. In practice, this means troublemakers must be perpetually catechized in the hopes that they will trip over some detail and thereby confirm their own illegitimacy.

Brian McLaren has had to endure this perpetual catechizing for a long time, yet he still does so with patience and grace.

Pat Robertson says winter is cold, thereby proving that climate change is a socialist conspiracy cooked up by radicals who plan to “take over all of the plants and the manufacturing of the world.” You know, an evil socialist conspiracy full of radicals like the brazen Commie sitting next to Al Sharpton in this We Can Solve Climate Change ad from way, way, way back in 2008. Who could possibly remember something from that long ago?

• The news from here in Fracksylvania: “The Chevron Guarantee: Our well won’t explode … or your pizza is free!” To make up for the inconvenience of a deadly explosion and the fire that burned for five days after a fracking site blew up near Bobtown in southwestern Pennsylvania, Chevron gave everybody coupons for one (1) large pizza and a 2-liter bottle of soda from the local pizza place.

(Wait … what happens if the next fracking well explosion takes out the local pizza place?)

• Hey look, it’s a Christian lying about Planned Parenthood! What are the odds of that happening? (But then Christians trying to make themselves feel more righteous by inventing lies about imaginary Satanic baby-killers isn’t really anything new.)

This story reads like an early chapter in this story. That’s how all these stories end, except most of those bitter angry old haters can’t say they hit .366.
