• “Where human beings more freely take up the historical task of liberation intended by God, theology will be more truthful in its talk about God. Conversely, where human beings are deprived of this freedom, theology will be less true.”

• Candida Moss and Joel Baden on “Blood libel: The myth that fuels anti-Semitism.” They include a reminder that Christians themselves were once accused of being Satanic baby-killers: “The Christian writer Minucius Felix records one rumor, which spread widely in the second and third centuries, that early Christians would ritually kill and consume infants as part of their initiation rites.”

As the saying goes, if you don’t know who the mark is, then you are the mark.

That sleazy, cheesy maneuver where you try to undermine something necessary by complaining that it’s not sufficient.

Damon Linker can’t attack the ethical necessity of consent directly, so he attacks it indirectly, by pretending it can only be affirmed instead of other ethical principles. That’s neither logical nor honest, but it’s not nearly as troubling as the underlying question: Why does Linker feel threatened by the affirmation of consent as an essential starting point of any sexual ethics?

I can think of many possible reasons, but none that isn’t really creepy.

• Anna Zubkova wants to be elected as a probate judge in Connecticut, where she’s running as a Democrat. Zubkova says the fact that her husband is a white supremacist who runs a racist website shouldn’t cast any doubt on her ability to judge impartially, and insists she doesn’t share his views: “He did not have those views when we married, but acquired them after. What am I supposed to do? Divorce him?”

Yes. That is exactly what you should do. Or, at the very least, accept that not divorcing him disqualifies you from serving as a judge and/or running for public office.

• “The moment ‘Christian Pastor Acts UnChristianly’ ceases to be news-worthy, we’ve got bigger problems to deal with than a bad reputation.”

• George MacDonald described Heaven as a place where “all that is not music is silence.” This video from Guitar Center in Times Square proves that might also be a description of Hell.
