American Horror Show open thread July 8, 2016

Last night, the sound of a peaceful, dignified protest was silenced by the awful sound of gunshots in Dallas, Texas. Heavily armed, and apparently armored, gunmen targeted police present at the event, shooting 11 police officers, five fatally. Two civilians were also injured. It is heartbreaking, and enraging.

At this time, we know that three suspects are in custody and a fourth is dead after a long, violent stand-off with police. More information will likely be available later in the day on the identity and motives of the suspects, at which point everyone can busily explain how that information confirms their pre-existing opinions or theories.

Events like this inevitably cause some folks to cling more tightly to the sword, reciting again that passage from Romans 13 and insisting that this is why the authority of the sword was instituted by God and not wielded in vain. For me, events like this send me back to the verse that prefaces that passage, reminding me that it is not only wise, but necessary: Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Consider this an open thread to discuss and respond to the hateful killing in Dallas, and as a place to share whatever news surfaces while those of us who work the night shift get our rest. Let’s keep that discussion here while reserving today’s Left Behind re-run for the usual wide-ranging discussion of everything else.
