• Always up for some Bonhoeffer blogging by anyone not named Metaxas. This is from BooMan: “Be a Punk. Be a Pirate.”
• Among the millions who took to the streets last weekend were a few thousand people who gathered in Everybody’s Hometown, former location of Slacktivist HQ, Media, Pa. Over at Balloon Juice, Watergirl has photos from the Delco rally at the courthouse.
That courthouse in Media is an important place in terms of the history of public protest and the First Amendment here in America. Here’s that same place in the background of this photo from a 2021 WHYY piece celebrating the 50th anniversary of that heist: “How to break into the FBI: 50 years later, Media burglars get local honors.”
Their ability to pull off that heist was impressive. Their ability to keep that secret for decades was next-level impressive.
• White evangelical colleges and universities are starting to notice that MAGA has not carved out any exceptions for them in Trump’s war on higher education and that the leopards are not just going to eat Harvard’s face.
Chris Gehrz has his own thoughtful reaction and links to some other responses as well: “How the U.S. Congress Is Threatening the Future of Christian Higher Education.”
• Here is some encouraging, happy news: Conservative culture-warriors in Boise, Idaho, organized a “Hetero Awesomeness Festival” to counter Pride month celebrations and “divisive, racist programs like DEI.”
Wait, wait … that’s not the encouraging, happy bit. The encouraging, happy bit is this: “‘Hetero Awesome Festival’ flops hard, attracting only dozens.”
Apparently the sad handful of attendees included the hosts of a white supremacist podcast who were given permission by organizers to do a live broadcast from the “fest.” So now the organizers are desperately trying to explain that they only meant to be Anita-Bryant-style homophobic, not to be KKK-style white supremacist.
There mistake was holding this “festival” in Boise instead of in Doug Wilson’s Moscow, Idaho.
• “What Should You Do if ICE Comes to Your Restaurant?”
This excellent piece by Jaya Saxena for Eater is full of good legal advice and guidance for restaurant owners and workers, suggesting ways they can and should protect their rights.
Given that, though, it has little to say about what restaurant customers can or should do to protect those workers.
And thinking about that has me, again, remembering Anita Bryant.
(As a wise man from my current hometown once said, “Be a punk. Be a pirate.”)
