Once, Madame Noir‘s Victoria Uwumarogie interviewed the fabulous Donald Faison, my boyfriend in “Clueless” who’s gone on to star in many roles. In fact, I ran into him and his gorgeous family about three weeks ago at the airport. He’s an all-around great guy.
The interview is great, but one thing caught my eye that I wanted to show you. The interviewer asked him about me, since I’m a “controversial friend.”
What?!
Since when — in America — is speaking out controversial?
Other people from Clueless have expressed political views. The wonderful Alicia Silverstone is a proud vegan who worked for PETA, tweeted out that she voted for Obama, made fun of conservatives who don’t support gay marriage, and on and on.
Just because I speak out on the same issues, but on the opposite side, doesn’t make me “controversial.” It just makes me a part of the cultural conversation.
That’s what the media does. If a liberal speaks up, it is no big deal. If a conservative speaks up, suddenly, she’s divisive, polarizing, and “controversial.” Especially if that person happens to have darker skin. (By the way, Madame Noir — you say you are a black woman’s lifestyle magazine — why are you asking a black man about a black woman in an effort to drive a wedge between us? If your magazine only is for black, female liberals, you should say so up front.)
Anyway, I love Donald’s response:
ON STANDING BY HIS CONTROVERSIAL FRIEND, STACEY DASH
I stay out of political conversations. I think that’s the wrong way to go–for me. But Stacey is going to be Stacey. The person I know respects my views and the way I feel about things. Who am I to not give her space to talk? When we’re together, we don’t talk about that stuff. We talk about our friendship, our kids, and stuff like that. It’s crazy, politicians hang out with politicians even though they don’t have the exact same agenda. Just because Stacey and I don’t have the exact same agenda doesn’t mean we can’t be friends. So it’s weird when people ask me that question. “You still hang out with Stacey Dash?! Have you heard some of the things you’ve said?” As far as those who’ve cut off contact with her, that’s their prerogative.
Donald, thanks for the support of a — gasp! — conservative black friend. Can’t wait until our paths cross again!
