No, Dave Chapelle, Prince’s death wasn’t the “black 9/11”

No, Dave Chapelle, Prince’s death wasn’t the “black 9/11” April 25, 2016

When Dave Chappelle took the stage after Prince’s death, he was grief stricken. He knew Prince personally, and almost didn’t perform out of respect.  Then, he thought better of it.  He consulted with friends, who urged to go to ahead and do a show.  The result was a four hour tribute that I’m sure would’ve made Prince proud.

But there was one moment that wasn’t quite right.

As much as I love Dave — and think he’s hilarious — he told the audience that the  death of Prince “is the black 9/11.”

Let’s take a moment to digest that.

9/11 affected all Americans.

Black people were included in the death toll on that fateful day.

I get it — I am deeply saddened at Prince’s death.  However comparing the national tragedy that killed thousands of people to the death of a pop star icon just doesn’t work.
