Black restaurant owner lost customers because he catered an event for Trump son November 17, 2016

Just days before the election, Donald Trump Jr. was in Detroit, Michigan for a campaign event and hired Chef Don Studvent, a local black restaurant owner, for catering. That’s all it took for his loyal black customers to turn the situation political and call for a boycott of 1917 American Bistro.

It all began when Studvent went back to the campaign event to pick up his pots and pans. While there, Trump’s namesake posed with him for a picture. Once that picture started circulating on Facebook, the critics climbed out from under their rocks and accused the businessman of “selling out.”

“It hurts,” Studvent said from inside his empty lunch room. “They want to not only not support me, but boycott me! It’s unfair, and it’s selfish.”

“There is personal, and there is business, it should always be separate,” he added. “Business-wise I can’t take sides. I just can’t.”

The chef, who said he has voted Democrat his whole life, has owned the restaurant for seven years and is furious that his loyal customers turned their backs on him for simply making a living:

“I don’t deserve this crap! I’m not going to take it.”

And Studvent isn’t just worried about his own well-being.

“This is my living,” he said. “And not just my living, my employees, as well.”
