Congrats! Beyonce and Jay Z are having twin babies, not twin ‘clumps of cells’

Congrats! Beyonce and Jay Z are having twin babies, not twin ‘clumps of cells’ February 1, 2017

Beyonce and Jay-Z just announced their family is growing… by two!  She just posted on Instagram:

We would like to share our love and happiness. We have been blessed two times over. We are incredibly grateful that our family will be growing by two, and we thank you for your well wishes. – The Carters

What I love about pregnancy announcements is the way that they celebrate life and new beginnings. Many people don’t realize that Beyonce had a miscarriage before she gave birth to Blue Ivy. According to the Daily Mail:

‘About two years ago, I was pregnant for the first time. And I heard the heartbeat, which was the most beautiful music I ever heard in my life.

‘I picked out names. I envisioned what my child would look like. I was feeling very maternal.

‘I flew back to New York to get my check up – and no heartbeat. Literally the week before I went to the doctor, everything was fine, but there was no heartbeat.

‘I went into the studio and wrote the saddest song I’ve ever written in my life. And it was actually the first song I wrote for my album. And it was the best form of therapy for me, because it was the saddest thing I’ve ever been through.’

It’s so nice to see their family grow, after her terrible heartache.  I love what she once said once about being pregnant:

‘Being pregnant was very much like falling in love. You are so open. You are so overjoyed. There’s no words that can express having a baby growing inside of you, so of course you want to scream it out and tell everyone.’

Wait, what did she say was inside of her?  A baby.

What I love about pregnancy announcements is how everyone, everywhere calls the growing life inside of the mother a “baby.”  No one ever says, “Great news!  I’m carrying a fetus!”  Or, “Hey Mom, the doctor told me I was carrying a clump of cells!”

This just goes to show that no one really believes the pro-choice mantra — that it’s not a life, it’s not a baby, it’s a choice.  And we need to push back on this narrative.  In New York City, more black babies are being aborted than born.  This is a black genocide that we need to fight.

Congratulations to Beyonce and toJay-Z.  May their twin babies grow and flourish and may America become the type of place that protects black babies when they’re most vulnerable.
