2. Ashley Judd
Another person making the rape/election comparison is actor turned activist, Ashley Judd. She was in the news recently for reciting a profanity-laced poem against the president during the Women’s March the day after his inauguration.
What is surprising about Judd’s comment is that she is also a survivor of rape and incest:
“Raped as a child, bad. Re-raped by a political system that ordains a clown, really bad.
“I’m a rape survivor and a survivor of incest and I lived alone for two years as a child in two different states.
“The fact that there were adult men in my family who failed to protect me as a child [and] voted for him was really re-traumatizing.”
Believe me, I know the memories are painful but this is very irresponsible and more and more victims are coming forward to say this kind of talk is unacceptable.
The Independent Journal Review spoke with several women who are tired of hearing this comparison. Here’s what they said:
Tara:
As a victim of rape, I find that statement appalling. There is no comparison of someone forcefully violating your body and someone being elected President. It minimizes the devastating effects of sexual violence.I am sorry to any victims, including Ms Judd, for comments made or reported by the media that may have triggered pain from their past but to say the words “raped all over again” in reference to an election is absurd and diminishes the horror of sexual violence.
Shannon:
This is said from pure emotion, because if it was objectively worse, then she could bring criminal charges against half the population of this country. What she’s saying is that she is less psychologically able to handle the presidency of a man who said some crude things than she can handle invasive, intimate physical violence. This is proof that Ms Judd is in need of serious psychiatric help. I can’t think of a single person who would rather relive a real sexual attack than hear someone they don’t like speak. I certainly wouldn’t. And to imply that it’s worse is beyond ludicrous.
Susan:
As a survivor of rape I am deeply offended by her comments. As a non-snowflake, I am able to file her comments in the rubbish bin and proceed with my life. As an American, I support her right to free speech, even if she does choose to say completely idiotic things.Ashley:
As a victim of sexual assault as a child, Ashley Judd’s comment has me heartbroken and dumbfounded. Probably one of the most insensitive things one could say, if you ask me.Sexual assault isn’t something to throw around to make a political statement. It’s a serious crime that hurts real people who often end up with real permanent emotional and mental trauma. She obviously hasn’t ever dealt with the emotional fight against that type of assault.
As a side note, isn’t it weird that Ashley and Apatow are both Judds and share the same vile opinions about the election? Now THAT’s a comparison worth talking about.
