Namely, Bearing False Witness by Rodney Stark. You can read Mr. Shea’s endorsement here. Mark’s a great chap and I don’t disagree with him – although I don’t share his enthusiasm. Also Rodney Stark is emphatic that he is a Lutheran when his personal faith is mentioned in the book, the NR review of Stark’s book that Shea is relying on has misinformed him. Unless “Baptist scholar” means “scholar at a Baptist University”- but I think most people would read it as “scholar who is Baptist”. I am going to go out on the limb of suggesting NR flubbed that detail.
I freely admit that I called that book “worth your time” and I don’t take that back. If you want to see my full treatment of Bearing False Witness’ strengths- and its many faults- you can check out my review here.
