6 Oscars I’d Hand Out In A Heartbeat If The Academy Would Just Give Me The Chance

6 Oscars I’d Hand Out In A Heartbeat If The Academy Would Just Give Me The Chance February 21, 2015

1. First Time; Long Time
Some day, Roger Deakins will bring home a genuine, officially-awarded little gold statue as a sign that the Academy is finally ready to acknowledging what everyone else has known for years, and I will weep for joy and all will be right with the world. But tomorrow is almost certainly not that day, given the towering lead held by Birdman’s Emmanuel Lubezki. (Gold Derby gives Lubezki 1/10 odds; Deakin’s work on Unbroken? 100/1. Looks pretty cut-and-dried.)

So in the meantime, the coveted “First-Time Winner; Long Time Genius” award is Roger’s. (Runner-Up: No, I’m not going with Leonardo de Obvious here, because I’m not a huge fan of his work. I’m going with Ed Harris, instead.)
