That’s the title of this National Geographic video, and I defy anyone to contradict it. After they watch the video and/or read the article, that is. Truly, these are some strange (and awesome) animals. Watch these charismatic creatures shoot their tongues out like arrows to catch an insect, mimic leaves swaying in the wind, and display their hidden colors—and learn just how they do it. A few weeks ago, I posted a wonderful little short called “Every Star.” It (through the thread of its creator, Yawen Zheng) led me to another similarly-drawn, similarly-themed, similarly-wonderful short, “The Song for Rain.” And I felt that it deserved its own post. The animation tells the story about a little boy who meet a fox in a rainy day. The fox wants to collect water from the city, so little boy helps the fox with his plight and accidentally he found... Read more

Director Richard Donner is surely best known as the man behind the original Superman, which many (if not my contrarian self) still consider one of the finest superhero films ever made. He also helmed all four of the Lethal Weapon films, a highly entertaining (and surprisingly lucrative) series that doesn’t try to do too much and carefully stays out of the way of its stars and their undeniable charismata. (That last one is a rare ability, actually. Surprisingly rare. If you’ve got a real star... Read more

This is just a sizzle reel, right? Essentially? That doesn’t make it any less stunning, though. (1,000 fps is amazing. And now I need to go watch Step Into Liquid again. And Epic Tea Time with Alan Rickman. Because of course.) All images where shot using The Phantom Flex, Phantom Miro M-320S and the new Phantom 4K Flex with Arri Ultra prime lenses and Chris Bryan Films custom underwater housing’s. If any of you are curious as to what happens when you combine Richard Scarry and Sherlock Holmes, the answer is this fantastic little film. Charming style, story, and music, to be sure. But the thing that really makes it stick out is the way its creator (recent Sheridan Animation graduate Melody Wang) uses the newspaper as an integral part of the action, rather than just a backdrop. Great stuff. (Plus, lots of special features, and y’all know I love those.) I’d happily watch a whole... Read more

Remember a few weeks ago when I told everyone to watch John Sayles’ The Secret of Roan Inish, newly to Netflix? And remember when I said it’d have to hold y’all over until Tomm Moore’s Song of the Sea was made available on one of the mainstream platforms (although I also said you should just rent it because it’s that good)? Remember? Well, you’re starting to run out of excuses, because it’s now streaming on AMAZON PRIME. (It can also be rented... Read more

I’ll be honest. A website that licenses music wasn’t where I would have expected to find a blog post about cinematography. But I’m catholic (small “c”, in this case), so I don’t really care where awesome comes from, just as long as I find it. In that vein, I can confirm that this blog post from Premium Beats on the Instagram accounts of great (and in some cases, even famous) cinematographers is both unexpected and awesome. Especially since it starts with @chivexp... Read more

I’m putting the chances Cormac will rush off to find himself a big ol’ canister of sulphur hexafluoride as soon as he sees this clip at just about 100%. (I’d go “more definite” if I could, but this isn’t a sports metaphor.) Yes, I realize Adam said no one should try this at home, but this stuff’s crazy. (Which, “inexplicably,” brings me back ‘round to Cormac.) Also, yes. By “Cormac,” I mean “Me, but I can’t say that out loud, because I’ve got a reputation... Read more

This one reminded me of Pixar’s “Knick Knack.” And of “Frog and Toad Together.” And of cookies; warm, gooey, fresh baked chocolate-chip cookies. …and I have to go home now. For…reasons. Still in “Much Too Hasty” mode, but one of my “Draft-and-Follow” films just popped up on AMAZON PRIME, so I’m just going to roll this one out there and call it good. Here’s Dear Frankie. After years of lying to her son and pretending his deadbeat father is away at sea aboard the HMS Accra, a protective mother must find a man willing to pose as the boy’s dad when the ship docks right by their home. In addition to PRIME, the film... Read more
