Asking Why

Asking Why April 18, 2007

Just add this one to the topics I must have missed in seminary: “horrible human disasters and how to deal with them”.

Recent events at Virginia Tech have certainly affected the Calvary congregation.

Specifically, three families in our church have members who are currently students, one who lived directly above the women who were shot in the dorm.

Why, why, why?

I am the pastor and . . . I DON’T KNOW WHY.

And I even went to seminary.

I feel just as horrible, just as scared, just as outraged . . . as everyone else.

One thing I know for sure: we clergy are stymied just like everyone else, wondering what to say and what to do, wondering how on earth a horrific event like this could have taken place when we believe . . . we believe in a God of goodness and grace?

Why?

I am asking the same question as I think about my kids at school every day and wonder about the state of this country, where anyone anywhere can pick up a gun and kill, kill, kill . . . it just seems so wrong.

Lord have mercy
Christ have mercy
Lord have mercy on us.

    Hi Amy

Why is it. Being human. Being flesh and blood and a fall of man. Being one who come the father of Adam and Eve.

Looking like as it pass by… People running up hit some one on the head for a full dalliers, Drive by shouting, A mother or father coming to a hospital for there son or daughter being hurt or trespass upon. MMMM.

I was not a church kid all my life. Seeing horror movie. Killing and murders. MMM. I just only wonder. Some say movie or books should be held accountable for there action. We’ll some say Movie theater should screen there people before entering the theater. MMM Maybe parents should screen there kid on what they watch…. MMM IF, WHAT, WHO, MYBE, WHAT IF AND WHO COME?

Question… We are strange if a faerie land. We are only pilgrim on a hard granny. We are just passing there. Why are these happening to us? Evil is all around us. We are in a tug of war, between the devil and god.

But only thing is between us and god is he’s not going to give up on us. Every we fall he is there to give us a hand. Bad thing will happen. But don’t turn away when bad thing happen. Look at Job. And tell owner self. What is true to owner self. What wood it take to rip us away from the father who love us so much that wood clean us from owner own sins. Bear down, head forward, and don’t let anything turn you away from the servant of owner God away from you.

Most theologies ascribe to God benevolence, omniscience, omnipresence and omnipotence. I firmly believe in the benevolence and omnipresence of God. However the only way I can understand suffering and tragedy is to deny the omnipotence of God.

I cannot accept that a loving gracious God would allow something like the Virginia Tech massacre to happen, and I cannot accept that the same God has in mind some greater purpose that justifies such an event.

Amy, I cry out with you, Kyrie Eleison
    Lord have mercy.
    Christ have mercy.
    Lord have mercy on us.

(For those interested in a brief discussion on God and evil, I suggest the Wikipedia article on theodicy.

Thank you Amy for your words. I needed to hear another pastor simply cry out. Thank you.

I wonder if it is our job as faithful to ask why in these situations? Perhaps we are meant to merely bare witness to the ultimate brokeness of the world. Bare witness in language and conversation to brokeness and the necessity for forgiveness. Perhaps it is our job to not forget that 33 people died that day-one of who will never be grieved by society. Perhaps it is our job not to cry for the 32 whose lives were taken, but the one sheep who never knew grace..

    perhaps.

No. Why indeed, when man falls, does he fall so far and so low?
