So, I was sitting here at the computer frantically working through my to-do list.  You see I have so much to get done for work, on this, MY FIRST MORNING OF VACATION.  The kids and I leave tonight for ten days in Paris, and, as you know, the whole world might fall apart in my absence . . . ! As I was working, writing my newsletter column and sending off a few last emails and getting making some last... Read more

Hosea: A Holy Trouble Maker Hosea 11:1-11 Today we’re reading Hosea again, a prophet who takes bringing a personal approach to the work of ministry . . . to a whole new level. Last week we learned about Hosea’s family life, his marriage to Gomer, and Hosea’s deep pain over Gomer’s infidelity. Hosea used his own experience to talk to the people of the northern kingdom of Israel about the feelings God was having about them and their behavior. Today... Read more

This week’s sermon came on the heels of Preacher Camp.  What that means is that this was really a collaborative sermon, born when one of us asked the group: “Hey, anybody preaching on the Hosea text this Sunday?  What’ve you got to share??!?”  Lots of conversations, passing comments, brilliant brainstorms, and furious note-scribbling ensued, and those of us working with the passage came up with some great shared ideas.  I have to thank, especially, Jim Somerville, for his conversations with... Read more

When we all got together this past week it was incredible to sit in together and think about where we’ve been, what the journey together has been like, and the incredible gratitude I feel to have somehow, miraculously, been included in such company. It started seven (!) years ago.  Jim Somerville and I had been meeting weekly to discuss the text for the week.  Every Monday morning we’d meet up at Starbucks and kick around ideas, fill each other in... Read more

Sermons from the Calvary pulpit: July 18, 2010 A Sermon by Rev. Edgar Palacios Amos 8:1-12 Jason Smith will translate when I speak in Spanish, but when I speak in English, it is your responsibility to understand me. Hay un problema que expresa la maldad humana. Este problema se da en las relaciones personales y en las estructuras sociales, sean políticas o económicas. Me refiero a la injusticia. Existe injusticia en la familia, en el trabajo, en las instituciones civiles... Read more

I was going to write 30 things I learned from blogging for 30 days but that was just too ridiculous; I’m done with the whole 30 Day shtick for awhile.  So, I am going to attempt to reflect here on some of the (many, though maybe not 30) lessons I learned from my recent experiment of writing something—anything—for 30 straight days on my blog. A little review: I took on the 30 Day Blogging Challenge because, while I have been... Read more

Holy Trouble Makers: Amos Amos 7:7-17 I really hated the film Greenberg.  Perhaps you’ve seen it.  If you haven’t, I’ll try not to spoil it for you.  If you have, well, I’m sorry. It wasn’t that the film was bad—ironically, it’s very well-made and layered with metaphor and meaning.  The problem for me was that the main character, Roger Greenberg, is annoying beyond belief.  I couldn’t stand him during the film, and I left the theater still fuming (clearly) about... Read more

It’s Day 30, which I knew would come whether I blogged 30 times or not, but I am feeling pretty good to be here with 30 entries (some of questionable quality, but still . . . ) registered on the blog.  It feels like running around the bases and finally getting to home, which is a weird metaphor for me to be imaging, since playing sports that involve bases is not in my realm of experience.  Okay, playing sports at... Read more
