But after reading this open letter to him in which he is given the very good advice NOT to hire Katie Couric for the CBS Evening News, I just had to comment:
Yes, Couric has winning appeal – mostly in the form of a bubbly charm — and she would most likely attract a boatload of new viewers to your network.
…
…I would like to suggest another approach, a much CHEAPER route than Couric to fill the job (Do I have your attention now? I thought so).
Instead of chasing after America’s Sweetheart, Couric, you should try hard to invent a star of your own.
I completely agree. Also, if Moonves is a political animal, and we suspect he may be, then he must be aware that Couric has rather high “disapproval” ratings – there is a built-in contingent of folks who will do anything they can to avoid CBS Evening News if Couric is anchoring. Moonves smartest move, and cost-effective one, too, would be to bring in a relative unknown who is bright, congenial, camera-friendly and who can actually write her own copy. And I have a suggestion for him, too – and if he’s smart he’ll consider it: Hire CNN’s DELIA GALLAGHER.
I’m very serious. She was absolutely fantastic during the coverage of the death and funeral of JPII, and the elevation of Benedict XVI. She can think on her feet, she’s likeable and respectable, she puts forth an air of detachment and fairness and she appears to be whip-smart. And…she’s a real journalist, not a media-created patter-monster.
Delia Gallagher is your girl, Mr. Moonves – I’m dead serious. Smartest move you could ever make, and believe me, with that lady you will bring in those desirable demographics. Men love Delia Gallagher. Women want to be Delia Gallagher. The same cannot be said of your attitudinous current interest, who really – when you think about it – shouldn’t be stepping from the Thanksgiving Parade to the once-proud desk of the Tiffany Network.
And too, there is always Lester Holt. Either one would be a vast improvement over Couric, and I think a real boon to CBS.
