I’m supposed to be working on a project, so naturally, I am over here looking at knitting patterns. This one is beyond my skills (and my pocketbook), but that doesn’t stop me from wasting my time looking at it.
As I’ve written elsewhere, I’m a deplorably bad knitter – much better at crochet – and yet I love knitting more than crocheting, so there you go. But even though I wouldn’t dream of trying to make the thing, isn’t it pretty?
I do this with my husband all the time, too. I never actually want clothes or jewelry, but I always make him look at stuff. Then he says, “do you want it?”
And I say, “no, no way, that’s not me!”
Then he says, “then why are you showing it to me?”
Says I, “because it’s pretty!”
It’s a men-are-from mars moment, I guess. He doesn’t understand why I bring anything to his attention if I don’t want him to either solve it, fix it or procure it, and I don’t understand why he doesn’t want to just enjoy looking at pretty things.
He’s a wonderfully generous fellow, though, and when we’re in Flushing he’ll put up with me going into the sari shops so that I can stare at and coo over all the gorgeous fabric I covet but will never buy because I can neither sew nor wrap. Of course then we get to eat Chicken Shahi Korma and Lamb Saag, so, his patience is rewarded! :-)
Okay, I’m going back to work, now. Really. Just as soon as I look at one more thing…
