So, how’s Katie doing?

By Jon Friedman’s lights, Katie Couric is not doing well. He thinks the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric is a quagmire, and cut-and-run should be the order of the day.

I don’t agree. Yet. But I do think Katie should stop bringing in protective padding whenever there is a big story on the horizon. This time it’s Bob Schieffer. I can’t remember who she had backing her up during the elections, but I do remember thinking, back then, that whenever she brings on an extra hand it opens her up to the “gravitas” criticism that she’s a lightweight. Dan Rather wouldn’t have to co-blog with Schieffer on this big story, that’s for sure.

Then again, women are different from men and perhaps Couric is more into “partnering,” and doesn’t care how it looks.

Personally, while I’ve been more than willing to be fair to Couric, I still think CBS should have listened to me and gone with Dehlia Gallagher.

And perhaps Couric should stop agreeing to these sorts of interviews, which never seem to come off well. Like Hillary Clinton…more than a little glimpse leaves one with a vague sense of unease. I get images of Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada.

Streep was terrific in that film, btw.
