Jerusalem, if I forget you, fire not gonna come from me tongue. Jerusalem, if I forget you, let my right hand forget what it’s supposed to do. Something a little different: Hasidic rapper, Matisyahu taking apart Psalm 137 and dropping a little “break my stride” into it. Yes, I know it’s been out for a few years, but it takes a while for pop-culture to reach me. In the ancient days, we will return with no delay Picking up the... Read more

JOHN QUINCY ADAMS In every portrait taken at every age, his eyes just snap with intelligence. To look at John Quincy Adams is to acquaint oneself with lightening held barely in check. He was not a man in love with the idea of being loved. He abhorred small talk and trends. Although a gifted linguist who served successfully as a foreign diplomat, it was his pragmatism more than his populism that garnered respect. Perhaps that preference would be valuable to... Read more

You’ll note a couple of new blogads if you look below the Rosary Podcasts link. Friend Shana, a home-schooling mom of 8 and Secular Franciscan has her political tee-shirts and bumperstickers going, but today we also got an ad from the Toffeehouse, in anticipation of both Father’s Day and those end-of-school-year gifts you may need. We’ve talked about this before: The Toffee House is a family-owned and operated business; a home-schooling mom and dad make the candy while the kids... Read more

Yes, this is going to be one of THOSE round-ups, where I clear off all my open tabs of things I just read, and pass them off to you; covering everything from my personal stuff to a video recommendation or two. Fluff: Ann Althouse is running the inevitable captioning thread on this picture. Now I am on record as finding Michelle Obama to be an attractive woman with a mostly pleasing sense of style (but dubious judgment, as in wearing... Read more

Graphic and more at Nice Deb’s Evan Thomas, that bellwether of media obsequiousness, who once (accurately) predicted that the Democrat-loving press would give John Kerry “10 to 15% points” in his race fo the White House, has declared that President Obama is “sort of god”. Chris Matthews, who would suckle Obama’s manboobs, if only Obama would lactate for him, can be heard saying “yeah,” in the background. I’ve always told you they thought Obama a godling. Now, they’ve admitted it.... Read more

Pianogirl sent this my way, wondering how one would ask a friend to water the plants while on vacation. But I think it’s kind of pretty, in an eccentric, wonderful way. Very much a “make your own garden/bloom where you are planted” sort of thing. And I’m a sucker for geraniums and begonias. Speaking of water, Victor Davis Hanson talks about water rights, relates them to Obama’s foreign policy, and makes a lot of sense, you’re want to read him.... Read more

My birth father was easy to buy for; books, paints (he was a very amateur, and messy artist). My Father in Law, whom I adore, is the most difficult man in the world to buy anything for. Clothes? He wears the same things all the time, so whatever I buy him ends up in my husband’s closet. Books? He’s not into them. Hobby Kits? Enough with that, please. I knew we were done with those when we gave him a... Read more

This is just unimaginable. Kerry Martin, wife of Arizona Secretary of the Treasury Dean Martin, has died in childbirth, along with their son, Austin Michael. Kerry Martin died at 34 on May 25, hours after delivering Austin, as a consequence of the rupture of a benign tumor on her liver. Austin died two days later as a result of complications from the birth. .. In a eulogy leavened with humor, Martin remembered his wife as a kind and passionate woman... Read more
