The news is: fascinating, troubling, confoundingly stupid, entertaining, amusing, cautionary, worrying, dysfunctional, encouraging, discouraging, predictable, mind-boggling, wholly engaging and completely addictive and I would rather not pull myself away from it, but a deadline looms and I have to do it. I’d much, much rather be talking about how President Obama is going to put a lot of people out of work and make life much more difficult for the auto industry and the oil industry by allowing state-by-state emissions... Read more

Who needs the saints, what’s the point? A nicely done video by Fr. Jim Martin, author of My Life With the Saints, which has been endlessly plugged around here, and with good reason. It’s a good way to spend 3 1/2 minutes. I’ve written before about the Communion of Saints and what it is like to pray with the cloud of witnesses St. Paul tells us are always around us. Christians profess the Communion of Saints in the Apostles Creed,... Read more

Sorry so quiet – big family birthday shindig yesterday and today I am working on a project for Lent. 8 PM Tonight, National Geographic Channel: On Board Air Force One: Journey inside the most secure aircraft in the world, Air Force One, as it carries the President through the confusion and terror of 9/11, a secret mission into Baghdad and a whirlwind diplomatic mission through the Middle East. With unprecedented access, National Geographic introduces you to the presidential pilot and... Read more

While out and about, driving and listening to the news, one thing did occur to me… I think absolutely everything President Obama has so far done or declared is pretty much exactly what Jimmy Carter would have done or declared. Just saying. Welcome back Carter? Read more

Not too much hate-mail, lately, which is a nice change. Someone from the left actually wrote that she appreciated how “fair” I was to Michelle Obama on her clothes. Well, thank you, I try to be fair. No one can be, all the time, but I would hope that that correspondent has been at least as “fair” to Bush once in a while in the past few years. What am I saying, I’m sure she has been! :-) THANKING YOU... Read more

Well, not really. In my Inaugural day linkfest, I made a quick and O/T declaration: “This looks exactly like my elder son. Well, he does. Exactly. Even Elder Son’s eyebrows raised when he saw this picture of Fr. Christopher. It gives me an idea of what he’d look like if he was an Orthodox priest, blessing the waters: I found the picture at The Crescat – a place I check in with most days because, like Happy Catholic, it is... Read more

I’m composing this in the wee small hours, in hopes that eventually sleep will kick in and this will go up as scheduled – here is a linkaround of my insomniac reading: Victor Davis Hanson has an uneasy feeling. And more cowbell won’t fix it. Obama vows to clean up American politics. From a Chicago pol, that’s interesting. Barney Frank is still in charge of the banking committee, right? Tuskegee Airmen: A moving piece about one who attended the Inaugural... Read more

I am not one who is comfortable rattling a tin cup to keep the site supported, but reader Donna wrote asking how she could make a donation to the site now that the Amazon Honor System is gone. Thankfully there is always PayPal – the donation button is near the top of the right-hand sidebar, just above the Amazon search box. I am always surprised, grateful and very humbled whenever I receive a donation, and yes, I do pay for... Read more

A surprisingly decent photoessay out of Time Magazine. The remarks of the second photographer are interesting. He describes the “cult of personality” he saw developing around W after 9/11, and says he found it “shocking” to see in America. Because this is about Bush, we do not know what he thinks about the Mega-cult and magic thinking surrounding Obama. That’s not a critique of the photographer, who seems very fair. And more pics with Bush and his “warriors”. Btw, this... Read more

Deacon Greg Kandra does a podcast interview over at America Magazine. He’s got a nice voice. I’m trying to wheedle him into doing something together, but as I wrote the other day, I can’t podcast again until we find some way to quiet down the computer. Since it was repaired the noise is off the charts! Go take a listen to Greg! And my stuff is over here. I really hope I can get things fixed before Lent. Read more
