As I have said before, The middle finger is the first refuge of the 14 year old. Or the maturity-challenged perpetual adolescents. When he was caught flipping off Hillary Clinton, Obama’s camp said the idea that he was using his middle finger to do anything but scratch an itch was “absurd and untrue.” Okay. Once might be absurd and untrue. Twice – under similar circumstances – begins to seem like an immature and passive-aggressive habit. What a statesman! What a... Read more

I call heaven and earth today to witness against you: I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. Choose life, then, that you and your descendants may live, by loving the Lord, your God, heeding his voice, and holding fast to him. (Deuteronomy 30:19-20a, New American Bible) The issue of Obama and Life will likely be written about a great deal today. As I come across thoughtful posts on the issue, I’ll link to them.... Read more

I ain’t sly enough to actually make a prediction on the scale of Ed Morrissey’s; he calls for a close race with McCain/Palin squeaking out a win. And – while I agree with her prediction – I won’t take Kate’s rather easy road on this one; of course she is correct. Okay, here’s one prediction I’ll make: If McCain/Palin wins, the press and the Dems will stroke out and Obama will play The Ultimate Chutzpah Card and say that at... Read more

The election was stolen from us, so we gotta steal it back. Sad and funny. Mostly sad. Really sad. Read more

I don’t know why the McCain camp is not running constant ads – at least in PA and Virginia, highlighting Obama’s admission that – given the opportunity – he’ll bankrupt any new coal plants. The press, of course, is mum. As we see with the LA Times, which arrogantly will release neither tape nor transcript of Obama speaking at an Israel-bashing event (can you just imagine how quickly they’d deliver same were John McCain speaking instead), they have no interest... Read more

From Night Watch, perhaps my favorite book by Terry Pratchett : There was Rosie Palm, and Sandra, and Reg Shoe, and half a dozen others sitting around another table, in the middle of the street. As Vimes stepped out into the evening, a plaintive voice said: “You cannot fight for ‘reasonably priced love.’” “You can if you want me and the rest of the girls on board,” said Rosie. “‘Free’ is not a word we wish to see used in... Read more

A reader who asks for anonymity but refers to himself as “a product of Pittsburgh Steelworkers” writes about his discomfort over Obama: Dear Anchoress: An observation about Barack Obama that bothers me enough to write somebody an email. Barack Obama said during the first debate that he would sit down and talk to Iran, a state sponsor of terrorism, without preconditions because he did not believe in the notion that by not talking to people we are somehow punishing them.... Read more

Ann Althouse asks an interesting question: Why isn’t Obama that far ahead? I have no idea what any of it means, or how next week will turn out – how can anyone project anything in the face of voter “registration” fraud, whackadoo polling and an in-the-tank media? But all of this uncertainty – all of these “narrowing” polls are proving one beautiful thing, definitively: that America actually is more post-racial than most realize. Think about it. Obama can’t break 50%.... Read more

I got an email asking whether Christians should celebrate Halloween. What the what? Is this a thing now? There is even a question? You know what the answer is? “Come on, folks, lighten up!” I recall getting into it a few years ago with a middle-aged Catholic woman, who was upset with me because I embraced Halloween with enthusiasm and dressed my kids up as scary invisible monks. That particular year, as I recall, I had a purple witch hanging... Read more

After the veep debate between Joe Biden and Sarah Palin, Peggy Noonan looked like the sad lady at the end of the bar when she peered up at Brian Williams and said “she killed.” One might have thought that Noonan, a avowed conservative and loyal keeper of the Reagan flame, would have been pleased with Palin having “killed” in the debate, but no – that was not the impression Noonan gave. A pal of mine who writes for a “prestigious”... Read more
