The Easter Triduum begins tomorrow. I have not decided if this year I will skip the Chrism Mass of Holy Thursday – it’s a great liturgy but a long one. Depends on the energy I have, I guess. Right now I am so tired, physically, mentally and spiritually, that I don’t know what to do with myself – you can see it in my writing and my reasoning, which are both a bit wobbly right now. Sometimes it feels like... Read more

I confess, after excitedly looking forward to HBO’s presentation, I am a little disappointed. Not tremendously so, because I knew the book could never translate perfectly to the screen, but…yeah, disappointed. I had thought Paul Giamatti – an actor I admire a lot – would be the perfect John Adams, but it seems to me he has not managed to get inside him. Adams was a man with a temper, a tendency toward vanity and stubbornness, it’s true, but he... Read more

:::Please scroll down for update::: I like to give people the benefit of a doubt, but I’m pretty tired, now::: Everyone and their mother has opined on Obama’s speech, yesterday, and I don’t have anything wise to say. I tend to agree with Tom Maguire; Obama probably did what he needed to do to assuage the Democrats, and those Independents who run center-left. As to its content and delivery, I suspect I align with Jon Podhoretz, in that the speech... Read more

There is no way of telling people that they are all walking around shining like the sun.” –- Thomas Merton Fr. James Martin notes an anniversary. …today, March... Read more

The other day the old furnace needed repair. Tonight…the old furnace dead. House cold. This is unrelated to the technical difficulties that kept me from writing earlier today. But it’s been one of those days. To keep you amused and entertained while things are a bit undone over here, I’ll show you my most googled post, which KIA asked me about a few days ago. LABIAS UP! VAGINA-GAZING SEASON IS OPEN! Originally posted November, 2005 Or something. (H/T Tongue-tied.) No,... Read more

From time-to-time I get a notice from Amazon.com or Paypal that someone has been so kind as to make a gift to the site (and yes, I do claim them on my taxes!) Paypal donations always include the name and email address of the giftor, thus I am always able to send a personal note of thanks. Amazon, for some reason, does not always give me that information. I don’t know, perhaps folks elect to be anonymous. In any case,... Read more

In England, a vicar was attacked by “Asian youths” and beaten badly enough to be brought to the hospital. The Reverend Alan Green, Area Dean for Tower Hamlets, said it was the latest in a series of “faith hate” crimes in the borough. He said: “It was a nasty cowardly attack. There were several groups in the churchyard and two from one group attacked him and the other group came and helped him back to the house. “He was kicked... Read more
