Terfel as Scarpia Royal Opera House, London, June 2006 I love, love, love this idea The Metropolitan Opera announced yesterday that it would begin broadcasting live performances into movie theaters across the United States, Canada and Europe, rubbing shoulders with professional wrestling and rock concerts. The broadcasts are part of a strategy by the Met’s new general manager, Peter Gelb, to widen the house’s appeal by branching out into new media. The Met also said on Wednesday that it was... Read more

Iran’s Ahmadinejad is coming to New York. Where’s Rudy Giuliani when you need him? Ten years ago, in 1995, Giuliani booted Arafat from his city. (H/T> Ninme). At the time he said <a href="http://www.jewishworldreview.com/cols/feder020399.asp" "I would not invite Yasser Arafat to anything, anywhere, anytime, anyplace…". Giuliani was criticised by the Clinton administration for his move. In 1995, Giuliani was roundly criticized by then-president Bill Clinton and The New York Times for having Arafat removed from a concert in celebration of... Read more

One of the things we all used to say about President Clinton was that he never learned that the cover-up was always worse than the scandal. Had he come out straight on Monica Lewinsky and said, “yes, I did it, it’s between me and my wife and it’s none of your business,” the whole story would have disappeared quickly. Same with about ten other scandals surrounding him or his administration. When it comes to this film, The Path to 9/11,... Read more

I tend to concur this part of an interesting post at Called as Seen in this post: It seems that the only real reason to get out an vote these days is the war on terror. At least the Republicans will fight. And so, I guess my vote is decided. All I can do at this point is to make clear that my vote comes in spite of the House GOP’s obstinancy and disingenuous maneuvering on immigration, despite the poor... Read more

Let’s see…the madman of Iran is coming to the UN via Cuba… President Bush has, in two days, made two remarkable – and exceedingly serious – speeches, the first on Iran and the second on military tribunals and how we are capturing terrorists and using the information gleaned from them to prevent further attacks (that second speech did a lot of myth-correcting, so you won’t see much about it in the press – go read the speech)… And all we’re... Read more

UPDATE::: SCROLL DOWN FOR ORIGINAL POST::: The NY Post reports that Bill Clinton is trying to get ABC to to pull its docudrama, The Path to 9/11 if it does not make his desired changes. A furious Bill Clinton is warning ABC that its mini-series “The Path to 9/11” grossly misrepresents his pursuit of Osama bin Laden – and he is demanding the network “pull the drama” if changes aren’t made. Read the whole article. Clearly, unless a thing makes... Read more

Hugh Hewitt looks at the new CBS Evening News blog – Couric and Company and pronounces it “perky” which makes one wince. He suggests that the blog editor, Greg Kandra, has a rather thankless job. (Well, Hugh actually calls it, “the most embarrassing gig in the entire blogosphere.” I completely disagree, there. That job has been taken up by whoever it is who runs about DU and Koz deleting comments by dissenters in order to maintain blog-purity and conformity, but... Read more

The problem with writing as much as I do is that I don’t get to read as much as I’d like. Too often I fall behind in reading the folks in my blogroll – who are there because I think they’re absolutely worth reading – and linking to them in “round ups,” but it is the only way I can direct you to so much interesting stuff and still stay reasonably sane. I hope the folks I link to don’t... Read more

Howie Kurtz has the quickest review up, near as I can see, and he seemed to like Katie Couric just fine. The first block said it all. Couric led with a three-minute news feature by Lara Logan in Afghanistan, with striking footage of Taliban fighters with their weapons. It was not a hard-news “scoop,” and therefore an unusual lead story, but an eye-opening look at America’s other war. This was followed by the only this-happened-today story, a Jim Axelrod report... Read more

“Was not Nagasaki the chosen victim, the lamb without blemish, slain as a whole burnt offering on an altar of sacrifice, atoning for the sins of all nations during World War II?” – Dr. Takashi Nagai 1908-1951, on Martyrdom, from All Saints by Robert Ellsberg It is the rarest of days when I disagree with my favorite blogfather Ed Morrissey, but after mulling over this post of his as well as others, and after thinking quite a lot about the... Read more
