… true story. While in the hospital this past week my doctor came in the room to go over my test results. He saw the rosary on my bedside table and the crucifix around my neck and asked if I was Catholic. When I answered yes he beamed a big smiled at me and said …
“Me too! High five!”
It was the funniest damn moment; high-fiving a doctor because we shared a common faith. But it got my thinking [because the hospital didn’t have wifi and I was bored out of my wits] the Catholic Church and Her members really are sort of like a secret society. We have a hand gesture, the sign of the cross. We have our own terminology, extreme unction [which I got reacquainted with during my stay]. We also have our own identifiers like crucifixes, medals and rosaries.
The nuns may have given up their habits, but the laity are still easy enough to spot in a crowd.
