… When I was a teenager we had one phone in the entire house. It was centrally located, mounted on the wall, and one a very very short chord. There was no such thing as having a private conversation with my friends. My mom firmly believed that I shouldn’t say anything to them I was ashamed to say in front of her. Oooooo and I hated her for that. But I stayed out of trouble. For the most part.

I’ve sort of developed this philosophy in my own parenting, though not as extreme. I generally believe in trusting kids till they give a reason not to trust them. And my son’s only ten.
