… Why does this bother some people so much?

I sincerely don’t get what the problem is.

If you see someone praying the rosary during mass why do you assume they aren’t actively participating?

What do you think active participation looks like? Following along word for word every single thing in the missal? And if you take your eyes off the missal or let your mind wander for one blessed second do you panic and wonder, “Oh no, I wasn’t actively participating!”
