On December 28. 1741, the British revivalist George Whitefield, co-founder of the Methodist movement and one of the chief preachers of what is known as “The Great Awakening,” wrote in a letter:
‘Redeem your precious time: pick up the fragments of it, that not one moment of it may be lost. Be much in secret prayer. Converse less with man, and more with God.’
