Last weekend we had the pleasure of hosting a group of students from the Praxis Urban Discipleship program at Columbia Bible College. I love what this program represents: a year of urban theology and practice with the intention of creating space for students to discern their futures. Great stuff! David Warkentin, a fellow Anabaptist, runs the program. He brought about ten students to our home last Saturday night to discuss urban church planting in a post-Christian environment.  (more…) Read more

Mark Moore is a personal friend. He’s a consistent source of encouragement and wisdom. He’s also a great preacher. Check out this clip to get a feel for his style and then check out the whole sermon if you have time… Link to full sermon. Also, check out his sermon “Church at the Feet of Jesus.” Flatout powerful. Read more

Anyone who enjoys quality theological inquiry can’t get enough of N.T. Wright. Readers of this blog know that I’ve been highly influenced by his teachings on Jesus, Paul, the early church, and new creation. Wright’s new book, which is volume 4 in his Christian Origins and the Question of God series, is called: Paul and the Faithfulness of God. This is 1700 pages analyzing Paul within his Greek, Roman, and Jewish context. I’m currently in the process of reading it and... Read more

I know that many of my friends hate the idea of “Christian celebrities.” I totally get it – although I’m less critical. Rob Bell finds himself in a situation where he can speak to the broader culture. I believe that this is a gift, one that he has for the most part wielded responsibly. His words on Super Soul Sunday build a great bridge to a culture that is spiritual but burned out by the oppressive examples of religion. Here’s... Read more

As most of you know, I recently moved to Seattle to lead a church plant. We have a fabulous Core Team and Launch Team… one that continues to grow in depth and relational connections. What’s fun is seeing the surprising ways in which God is already at work in our church. [check out our website: http://PangeaCommunities.com] Some of you probably know about our (for lack of a cooler sounding title at the moment) associate pastor, Brett Thatcher. He’s a gifted... Read more

Recently a pastor wrote an article about why God is not a pacifist. Not only so, he argued that Jesus (the “God-human”) is also not a pacifist and never taught such. He went on to claim that Jesus wasn’t a “pansy,”[1] as though being a pacifist equates one to this derogatory title. [Note: I, personally think, that such a word that has caused many folks shame, is not one to throw around. I use it in this article with that... Read more

As a pastor of a young church plant, I’ve been spending some time reflecting of the various influences that have shaped my approach to ministry and faith. I can sum up a huge influence with one word: BOOKS. Not that books are the only thing that I have learned from, but that they have been a companion on my journey of pastoral and spiritual formation. Through the written word, books (blogs and articles fit here too) have confronted my biases, surprised me with fresh ideas, affirmed intuitions, and shaped my... Read more

Check out this new translation that is being put together to reach out to native american peoples. Terry M. Wildman is putting together a paraphrase that seeks to: “…retell, in the tradition of the oral cultures, the story of the Bible. In doing so, I draw on the 15 years of experience I share in relationship with many Native Americans, and also from the 30 years of ministry experience which has included in depth bible study and theological reflection.” Here’s a... Read more
