I was at a meeting in one of my spiritual traditions this last weekend. It was a long meeting and a tough one. We were talking about the shadows of our tradition and how we might be able to show up better. Conversations were hard, smart, challenging, and beautiful. But something that came up was the concept of urgency. We felt compelled to make changes now, which was hard for several people attending these meetings. It got me thinking on the connection of urgency and magick.
Urgency
Sometimes a sense of urgency can feel overwhelming. Urgency can make us feel rushed or without enough time to make an informed decision. We might feel buoyed along by a group process without any solid footing on our own feelings. For some folks, this might be okay. Other folks however, might not feel grounded in the process, which brings any decision making to a screeching halt.
Urgency and Magick
Urgency and magick go well together. The power of urgency brings an understanding that swift action is needed. We need to step up and do something. Magick can be the something that we do. These two things go hand in hand. If someone gets in a car accident, immediately doing magick for health and healing can increase the efficacy of their healing process.
However, we don’t just do magick spells and let someone sit in the crashed car. They also get medical intervention and professional help. It takes the two hands – mundane and magick – to bring about the most positive results in healing. Medical intervention comes with a natural sense of urgency. Medical staff have to make decisions quickly. They have to trust in their skills and the skills of the other professionals around them. The sense of urgency is what motivates them to take action.
Emotion and Urgency
When I refer to a sense of urgency and magick, I’m not referring to emotionality – which is a word I just made up – and magick. If you are feeling desperate or panicked, that is not the time to step into magick. Being grounded, centered, and right sized is an important part of the process. If you are solidly in your power the force of urgency should not be a problem. And conversely, if you are caught up in your emotional reaction or trapped in your feelings over a situation the drive of urgency could lead you to making a poor decision.
Being Centered
Ultimately, as a magick worker being grounded, centered, and right sized is our most important magickal tool – perhaps second only to discernment. When we are working from a place of grounded right size, urgency should not be a problem.
