When I first got the review copy for Taste & See by Ginny Kubitz Moyer for the Patheos book club , I wasn’t really too sure what to think about it. But as I read the introduction it became pretty clear that this is a book that I need in my life right now.
“God speaks to me not in mystical, abstract ways but through the stuff of daily life.” , Ginny writes in the introduction. God talks to me in the same way, mostly in the hard parts of life when I feel like I can’t keep going, He shows up and walks me through whatever I’m going through. She also talks about seeing God in nature and in the words and actions of others. I just spent the weekend out in the middle of Nowhere Texas and realized just how clear God’s voice comes in out there. I didn’t understand why and then I read Taste & See and it all made sense.
God created us with five senses: sight, hearing, smell, touch and taste. Not only did He create us with them but then He Himself became man and had them as well. He choose to become man and see, hear, smell, touch and taste. Apparently He really loved his fish too! That means that these senses are pretty crucial to who we are and they have a purpose. It is through the senses that God reveals Himself to us and it is also through them that we find Him.
When I was off the grid this weekend the one thing that God spoke to me about was just how much social media pollutes my life with noise. When I’m plugged into Facebook I am not plugged into any of my senses, instead I am all in my own mind and thoughts. That is never a good place to be in constantly as human being. It is good to go inward to find the place where God dwells within us, but when we are constantly consumed with our own thoughts and opinions, we end up a twisted version of ourselves. The cure to that is being in touch with our senses and how God is speaking to us through them.
Taste & See isn’t a book that you can just fly through, it is a tool to use in everyday life to turn off the noise and to go into a deeper relationship with God and hear what it is that He is telling us. I really needed help to do that because I feel so overwhelmed with life always but never really take the time to sit in the quiet and think about all the places that I see God during my day.
If you are like me and easily distracted by all the noise in the world and need help to refocus then get this book!
